Languages Player Guide
» Home » Languages » Player Guide
Each character begins with a certain level of understanding of each language based on their race. When the character hears a message in a language they do not fully understand, it will come out garbled, but they will understand it slightly better. The rate at which different characters learn languages is also based on their race. This is so if you have races with very similar starting languages, they may pick up each other's language faster than someone who knows a completely unrelated language.
To speak in a language, write the language name in square brackets at the beginning of the message. The message will be intelligible to other people that speak the language, while jumbled to people that do not.
You can see a list of all languages by using /language list.
To see to what degree a character understands each language, you may use /language listunderstanding [player]
Sometimes there are circumstances where a character should understand a language for other reasons than their race. Perhaps it's a detail in their backstory, or perhaps they spent time studying a tome. In these cases, you may use /language setunderstanding [player] [language] [understanding] to set a player's active character's understanding of the language. Understanding is a percentage which may have a decimal value.
