A few small changes that I found useful, creating pull request so you can review and decide if these suit how you want to work.

Switched to pbzip2 for parallel compression
Cleaned up color codes on wget (related to my environment - liquidprompt) - shouldn't cause issues for others
Added pv for progress meter
Added some environmental settings for portage to speed things up - on evidence that they do but they don't harm either.
