one test failure in erasurecode/online_rebuild_mdtest.py looks like it could be an instance of known issue https://daosio.atlassian.net/browse/DAOS-17161

Converted this patch back to draft. We might consider closing it, actually. It is unclear that reverting the earlier changes is the right approach, see https://daosio.atlassian.net/browse/DAOS-17094?focusedCommentId=136832 by @gnailzenh
