Scalability refers to how well a system can grow.
That is increasing the ability to do whatever the system is supposed to do.
Scalability can be measured by the ratio of throughput gain to resource increase.
In a well-designed scalable system both numbers should be proportional: a twofold allocation of resources should double the throughput.
For example, a [Kubernetes](/kubernetes/) [cluster](/cluster/) scales by
increasing or reducing the number of [containerized](/containerization/) apps,
but that scalability depends on several factors.
