How do I create a layer? 📂
Layers can structure your map thematically, temporally, spatially, e.g. if you tell about different people and their stories or about different time levels, e.g. queer subculture in your city in the 90s, 2000s, etc.
❗️It is necessary to create at least one layer for your map. Only then can you create places / points of interest and add further material - pictures, audio, video.
❗️If you do not want to work with several layers for your map, the layer can also have the same name as the map.
To create a first layer, click on the bar '+ Create a layer for this map'. To add more layers, just click on the '+' sign on the right.
In the window that pops up now you have different options for information about the layer: title, subtitle, description.
In addition, you can enter text for a teaser if the text in the description is longer. You can also insert credits, e.g. for people who have supported you, information about copyright or funding.
❗️As when creating the map, it is also necessary to enter a title when creating a layer, otherwise you will get an error message.
❗️Again, you have the option of using the Publish button to keep the layer on the map invisible or to publish it.
Below the text fields on the right side there are options to insert images:
- Image
- Background Image
- Favicon Image
How to insert images is explained under 2. images, audio, video.
❗️For the functions on the left "Remove Exif Data" and "Rasterize Images" see Privacy Features.
You are automatically assigned a colour - 'Marker Color'. The places you create are displayed with this colour.
On the right-hand side, other colours are suggested as alternatives from which you can choose.
❗️You can also determine the colour yourself by entering a colour code.
🌸 Tip: Keep it simple for the moment! You can always edit the layer and the look later. We give you several options so that you can take your map with you in an individual design. You can decide which functions you want to use - and how to use them - according to your interests and skills.
And we all know: Less can sometimes be more ;)
Other features we will introduce later are:
- Submissions
- Predifened Basemaps
- Basemap Url
- Basemap Attribution
- Background Color
- Tooltip
- Sorting
- Mapcenter
With PREVIEW you can already see what it looks like.
At the end click on 'Create Layer'! After that you can start to add the first places on the map 🙂
