Your First Backpack

Expand this section to see the recipes for backpack parts and the basic backpack, which is dyeable.

Sleeping Bags

Make a sleeping bag by putting two wool of the desired color and a white wool into the top row of your crafting table.

Tanks, Hoses, Nozzles

Make a backpack tank by putting 2 iron ingots as caps on the top and bottom then filling the other spaces with 7 glass.
Make a nozzle by putting a gold ingot in the center top of the crafting table and an iron ingot in each diagonal space (2 total). Finish off by adding a lever into the bottom center.
Make a hose by placing a nozzle in the top left, then four green dye along the top and right sides.

Assembling the Basic Backpack

Make a backpack by either shearing a special backpack or by placing four leather in the corners of a crafting table, a gold ingot at the top and a backpack sleeping bag on the bottom, two backpack fluid tanks to either side, and a chest in the middle.

Backpack Storage Upgrades

Expand this section to see the recipes for backpack storage tier upgrades and how to apply them. All backpacks can be upgraded the same way.

Make four blank upgrades by placing 6 leather along the top and bottom of a crafting table, a backpack tank on either side, and a chest in the middle.

Make the iron tier upgrade by surrounding a blank upgrade with 8 iron.

Make the gold tier upgrade by surrounding a blank upgrade with 8 gold.

Make the diamond tier upgrade by surrounding a blank upgrade with 8 diamond.

Make the netherite tier upgrade by putting a netherite upgrade smithing template, a blank upgrade, and a netherite ingot into the smithing table.

Apply each upgrade in the 3-slot smithing table with a piece of leather instead of a vanilla smithing/trim template and the template as the material (tbh i get this reversed every time, shift-clicking works better). Apply each upgrade in the 2-slot smithing table with the backpack in the first slot and the upgrade template in the second slot.

Backpack styles

Expand this section to see the recipes or methods of acquisition for special backpacks, which are not dyeable. I am including armor tier upgrades here because armor is considered a special ability - you cannot, for instance, make a Netherite Backpack (+4 armor) into a Pumpkin Backpack (Staring at endermen no longer makes them angry), although you can increase the storage of a pumpkin backpack using upgrade templates.
