During work on the article How to make list markers stand upright in vertical text a number of comments were made that contain useful information about how to style lists with counters in Japanese. This issue points to the more useful comments, so that they are not forgotten.

Fyi, lists with counters, especially long ones, are often found in the endnotes and bibliographies of scholarly articles. Japanese vertically-set and free/open access samples can be found at J-STAGE.

  1. Go to Advanced search
  2. Enter search terms related to Japanese traditions
  3. Apply the following Filters:
    • Publication type
      • Journal
      • Research Report/Technical Report
    • Access type
      • Free access
      • Open access
    • Subject area
      • Humanities and Social Sciences
        • Literature, Language & Linguistics and Art

Keywords related to Japanese traditions include:

  • Ninja (忍者)
  • Murasaki Shikibu (紫式部, Lady Murasaki)
  • The Tale of Genji (源氏物語, Genji monogatari)
  • The Pillow Book (枕草子, Makuranososhi)
  • Ukiyo-e (浮世絵)
