Thanks for this! :-) It is indeed strange to still have this in gtypist in 2021. There is an alternative though (at least for the double-space issue):
-w --word-processor try to mimic word processors
So when running gtypist -w, wherever it expects two consecutive spaces, it will insert two when you type a single one.
gtypist -w
