Why does the gutter have empty columns left of line numbers?

In a 79-line file, it appears that there are 3 blank columns before the line numbers:

This is a waste of horizontal space.

The line numbers should be flush against the left side of the buffer, unless there is something to display there like Git info.

For reference, here's nvim:

Note that nvim has one blank column, which is also a waste of horizontal space.

I saw that, but I do want those things enabled when there's something to show. The issue is that the columns are shown even when there's nothing to show.

That's not possible right now and I'm not sure if the maintainers would be open to that, but I'll let them chime in if they have an opinion on it. But from what I understand, they want to have that kind of dynamic behavior implemented through the future plugin system.
