One of my podcasts is re-releasing “archived” episodes from before they started the current feed. Obviously, the <pubDate> for a 10+ year old episode isn’t valid. A <podcast:airDate> would allow podcasters to specify when they recorded or originally released such episodes.

I would suggest <podcast:recordedDate> instead. I think "air" is both overly tied to traditional broadcast media as well as potentially easily misunderstood. When I hear "air date," I think it's when the episode was first "aired," not when it was recorded (which might be important for some podcasters to distinguish).
