What happened?

Opening an HEIC file that includes location, sometimes fails.

image

Here are two example files: https://photos.app.goo.gl/1RCkHBYyFqn42mRq9

Both show location in Google Photos. However the one with the bee fails uploading to IHM, although it has location as shown.
The one with the info board opens very well on its location.

image

What steps will reproduce the bug?

Download the file with the bee and try opening in IHM.

What I expect to happen

To have IHM open all HEIC pictures that have location,

Platform

  • Israel Hiking Map app
  • Israel Hiking Map site in a browser

OS Name and Version

win 11

Browser Name and Version

Chrome

Additional information

iOS devices since iOS 11 use HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Format) as the default image format.
I'm switched to HEIC in my Samsung camera. Its nearly lossless and so offers better quality over JPG.

The image of the sign is a jpg file, not an heic image.

My bad. I replaced the sign with several other HEIC photos. None seem to open. Maybe the bug is that all do not open.

IHM doesn't support HEIC format.
Where are these images from?

I took the images in my Android phone. But its not about me. HEIC is the iPhone native format, so I think its good if it can be supported.

When I open the link to the album and open the image in the browser I don't see any location information:

In order to try and help I'll need an image that has a location of the relevant type, which I currently do not have as part of this thread.

I've read through articles about this format and I'm sorry to say that we don't plan to support it.
See here for more information:
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2020/12/coping-with-heic-in-the-browser/
The idea behind loading an image is to create a private POI with this image and the location it was taken. Since browsers do not support presenting this image we don't plan to support either.
It's too much work with too little benefit...
You can use other sites to convert the image I guess...
