Reproduction Steps

I only have the Iris Shader Mod in the mod folder and when I want to start Minecraft the game starts on the loading screen with exit code: 1
Everything is freshly installed, Minecraft, Java and the mod loader Neoforge

This was happening to me as well with just iris, installing sodium helped

Agreed with enlait. You'll also need to install the sodium jar file into your mods folder. Worked for me. Can find it on Curseforge or Modrinth.

Yes, it's missing the Sodium dependency in the neoforge.mods.toml. Really surprised to see that. It doesn't have parity with the fabric.mod.json.
